Jobs in Arts and Media
Management, 1985, 1990 & 1993
James Abruzzo is the author of
Jobs in Arts and Media Management.
First published in 1985 (Drama
Book Specialists) with subsequent
revised editions in 1990 and 1993
(ACA Books), it remains the only
book that describes all of the
management positions in each of
the arts genres and prepares students
and professionals for careers
in the management of the sector.
James continues to be published
widely; his articles on arts management,
nonprofit compensation, governance
and business structures, the role
of the private and public sectors
in the arts and related topics
have appeared in International
Arts Manager, ArtsManagement.Net,
Curator Magazine and other industry
publications. He also originated
the Cultural Index, a survey of
the measurement of the confidence
of cultural leaders in New York,
Chicago and Berlin, Germany published
semi-annually in those cities.
Arts Leadership,
2010
Currently James
is writing a book on arts leadership
that will be published in 2010 by
the Francis & Taylor Group of
Routledge. The book Arts Leadership
(working title) will be the first
book that makes the case that there
is a difference between arts management
and arts leadership, focusing on
the unique importance of the leader
in the success of an arts organization.
Below is an overview of the anticipated
book.
Leadership in the
arts is at a critical point. The
number of arts organizations without
competent leaders—or any leaders
at all— is growing at an alarming
rate: the present generation of
leaders are retiring or burning
out; the number of arts organizations
is rapidly increasing; and challenges
that resulted from reduced government
funding, changing audience tastes,
and competition from other leisure
time activities are creating the
need for stronger and different
kinds of arts leaders.
Unlike any other
book on this subject, Arts Leadership
will define successful arts leadership,
describe the traits of successful
arts leaders, and provide insights
for the development of the next
generation of arts leaders.
The book will be
organized around case studies of
leaders of five world-recognized
performing and visual arts organizations
in the United States and abroad.
The aim of Arts Leadership
is to examine the particular challenge
of the person in the leadership
seat. Dozens of in-depth interviews
with arts leaders in the United
States and abroad, supplemented
by primary and secondary sources,
will present real, relevant examples
of challenges leaders face and the
actions they take. To date James
has interviewed the Presidents of
The John F. Kennedy Center for the
Performing Arts, the Brooklyn Academy
of Music, and the Saint Louis Symphony
Orchestra, among others. This fall
he will be interviewing the heads
of the major cultural organizations
in Berlin and Paris.
Arts Leadership
will make the case that there is
a difference between management
and leadership, providing the reader
with a deeper understanding of the
differences between the two and
the unique importance of the leader
in the success of an arts organization.
It will go further to define particular
types of successful arts leaders:
the turn around leader; the creator/initiator;
the brand builder/sustainer; the
partner/collaborator; the adapter/change
agent.
Arts Leadership
will give James' insights from his
30 years of experience as an educator,
author and consultant in the field
of arts leadership. It will be used
in the colleges and university arts
management programs, by professionals
in the field and by those interested
in entering the field to study strategic
decision making and to improve their
own leadership abilities. It will
be global in scope and is targeted
to a broad, English speaking readership.
